For people who have difficulty tackling the stairs in their home, stairlifts provide a viable alternative to a disruptive and unwanted move. Choice is not the problem in today's market - quite the opposite - a wealth of products provides options for almost every personal circumstance and staircase configuration. The problem arises in defining which product, from the myriad available, will best meet the needs of your relative now and in the future.

If you are looking for a solution for yourself or a loved one, a stairlift may be the answer. The underlying reason many people purchase a stairlift is to stay in the home they love. There are those who have lived in their current home through generations. Leaving their home doesn't have to be a solution to mobility concerns.

There are many options for stairlifts, so you don't have to worry about finding one to fit in your home. There are stairlifts that can accommodate standard stairs, as well as curved stairs and homes with landings between sets of stairs. There are even stairlifts for outdoor use, so you don't have to worry about getting into your home or onto your deck.

If you find yourself struggling to negotiate the stairs, you may have decided to invest in a stairlift to help you out. Congratulations, the decision to purchase a stairlift for your home is a good step in the right direction, giving you more freedom and independence. However, it is probably the easiest decision of the process. What comes next is deciding what stairlift is right for you and is right for your home. Many people find this a difficult process since many don't know where to begin. There is a lot of information and suppliers out there, some of it may be confusing. This article aims to clear up some of the confusion around buying a stairlift.

The first important thing to consider is what type of stairlift you will need for your home. The two main types of stairlifts are straight stairlifts and curved stairlifts. Straight stairlifts are for staircases that go straight up, with no corners or bends. Curved stairlifts are for homes with staircase that has corners or twists. Don't worry if you have an unusually shaped staircase, as curved stairlifts are custom built to fit your particular staircase. For this reason, however, they tend be more expensive than a straight stairlift would be. If you're still unsure which stairlift would be most suited for your home, look into having a home visit for a survey of your home. Most suppliers do this free of charge, but don't allow any of them to pressure you into buying a stairlift there and then. You need to leave your options open for now, after all.

Next, you would need to decide whether you are going to buy a stairlift for permanent use, or rent one out for a small period of time. Obviously, if you have full-time mobility problems, such as arthritis etc, then you will need to buy a stairlift to have in your home permanently. But if you only need it for a short while, for whatever reason that may be, you only need to rent a stairlift, which can usually be rented for a certain amount per week. This way, it's much cheaper for you, and when you are back on your feet again the stairlift can be taken from your home leaving it as it was.
