It looks like Naples is moving up in the world of entertainment and nightlife. Many local taverns and bistros feature a round robin of very good entertainers who have moved or retired here, but the newly opened Carla's, has brought the sophisticated kind of place you'd find in any big city.
Owner Carla Valenti, an internationally acclaimed vocalist and recording artist, says, "This is a jazz club." The main focus is the music, with a set lineup of local instrumental wizards Stu Shelton on keyboard and John Lamb on drums, plus Valenti.
If you go just to hear the music, from 6:30 to 10 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, there is a $12.50 cover charge and two-drink minimum. Or, opt for dinner and the show, with a choice of veal, chicken or fish, for $37.50.
Manager and chef John Casamini gets help from his two sons, Anthony and Jonathon, and sister, Catherine, in running the food service. Wine is $7.50 a glass and bottled beers are $4, including some Italian brands. The food has an Italian flair, like veal Marsala. Meals include a salad, side dish and dessert.
Carla's atmosphere is intimate, with seating for 75. That means you'll never be far from the stage, and that's a good thing, because Valenti has played to rave reviews in Las Vegas, New York and London. Her smooth delivery and exquisite jazz phrasing have led critics to compare her with Sarah Vaughn and Dinah Washington.
As for the band, Shelton's been credited with channeling the modal genius of jazz pioneer Bill Evans. Lamb is an ex-rocker from Detroit who found jazz and saw the light.
The fledgling venue sold out on a recent Saturday night, so reservations are suggested.
