According to a study, majority of stroke patients may have attention disorders, most of which are not diagnosed.
30 August 2013, USA (http://www.zeepharmacy.co): According to a study, majority of stroke patients may have attention disorders, most of which are not diagnosed. The researchers analyzed 110 patients who were been treated for stroke along with 62 participants who had not suffered from stroke.
Five of the stroke patients had already been diagnosed with an attention disorder called ‘neglect’ which is a deficit of attention and awareness in one side of the body. All the subjects were requested to take part in an attention network test (ANT) so that the researchers could measure the patients’ alertness, executive control, and orientation. During the test the participants’ performance in the brain was measured with MRI scans.
The test involved computer game style measurement. The result of the test revealed that approximately 50% of the stroke patients had attention disorders that had not been diagnosed. The type of attention disorder was dependent on what part of the brain the patient had suffered the stroke. For instance: • Patients who suffered from strokes that affected front of the brain experienced difficulty filtering out distraction. • Patients who had stroke that affected the back of the brain had difficulty following instruction • Patients who had stroke that affected center of the brain showed reduction in alertness.
The brain scans taken during the test could be used to see which area of the brain had been affected by the stroke and the attention network test could be used to confirm the diagnosis. These findings therefore suggest a new strategy that helps to treat stroke depending on the information gained from patients’ brain scan.
