According to a study, eating too much red meat raises brain levels of iron. This may heighten the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

20 September 2013, USA (http://www.zeepharmacy.co) : According to a study, eating too much red meat raises brain levels of iron. This may heighten the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers explained that iron can accelerate the damaging reactions of free radicals. As time passes, iron builds up in the brain and the gray matter regions appear to contribute to the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other age-related illness.

The major risk factor of it is aging something that cannot be prevented. The two proteins called ‘tau’ and ‘beta-amyloid’ cause it. These two proteins either disrupt signaling between neurons or kill them off as we get older. The other feasible cause of it is iron accumulation.

Iron is vital for cell formation. However, too much of it encourages oxidative damage. The researchers also focused on the hippocampus which is an area of the brain that is involved in the formation of memories. They compared the hippocampus to the thalamus which remains unaffected until the last stage of the disease.

The MRI technique also helped in measuring how much brain iron is there in a protein that stores iron-ferritin. Measuring iron in the brain is difficult if the patient has Alzheimer's, because the quantity of water in the brain increases as the disease progresses. The more water in the brain, the harder it is to discover iron.

The MRI technology allowed the researchers to determine that the increase in iron is occurring together with the tissue damage. They discovered that the amount of iron is increased in the hippocampus and is associated with tissue damage in patients with this disease and also healthy older individuals.
