According to a new study, the researchers discovered that the size of the brains may indicate the risk of developing an eating disorder.

They said that the bigger brain size may be a reason as to why people with anorexia are able to starve themselves and have a possibility to predict the onset of this disorder.
The researchers studied 19 adolescent females with this disorder and approximately 22 adolescent girls without this disorder. MRI was used to study the brain volumes of the participants. The results revealed that females with this disorder had right insular, larger left orbitofrontal, and bilateral temporal cortex gray matter as compared to those females who did not have it.
The insula is an area of the brain that becomes active when we taste food while the orbitofrontal cortex is a part of the brain that tells a person to stop eating. Adults suffering from it have larger orbitofrontal cortex and insula. A larger volume in the orbitofrontal cortex area of the brain could indicate a pattern across people with eating disorder.
The researchers also add that this pattern could encourage individuals with eating disorders to stop eating before they have had enough food as compared to healthy individuals. The negative correlation between taste pleasantness and orbitofrontal cortex volume in individuals with this disorder could contribute to food avoidance.
The right insula is also responsible for the perception of the body image. This enlarged area in anorexia sufferers feel that they are fat even though they are underweight.
