Premature Ovarian Failure And Fertility-No Longer Oxymoron

Scientists in Japan have discovered a new infertility treatment for those who were unable to conceive before. It was usually on account of menopause like symptoms triggered by endocrinal failure commonly known as ovarian failure.

In this new experimental procedure, malfunctioning ovaries were laparoscopically removed from woman’s abdomen. They were cut into cubes and treated with follicle stimulating drug for two days. Treated cubes were transplanted into woman’s fallopian tubes. Women were treated with drugs to stimulate egg production. 37 women were given this treatment and researchers were able to take mature eggs from 5 of them.

When the eggs matured, they were taken out and fertilized with sperms. Fertilized eggs were re-transplanted in woman’s womb. This procedure became successful in a 30 year old woman who has recently given birth to a baby boy. One more woman is pregnant.

Researchers are planning to investigate this further for menopausal women between ages 40-45. It might be beneficial for women where early menopause is triggered by chemotherapy or radiation.

The technique carries only potential risks of laparoscopy and is believed to be safe. However, according to experts, long term effects of this procedure have not yet been established. It may take a while before it is commercially available.
