Researchers collected huge data from nearly 144,000 people between ages 19 to 90 that were affected by psoriasis. The control group consisted of 690,000 individuals who never contracted the disease. It was observed that people with Psoriasis are more likely to have chronic kidney malfunctions than those in control group. In case of people with severe psoriasis, risk of contracting the disease is twofold and risk of complete kidney failure is four fold. They may have to depend on dialysis to remain alive.
Severity of the disease depends on the percentage of skin area affected by the disease. People with 3% to 10% of skin affected are at lower risk than those whose more than 10% of the skin is affected. Researchers also found out age related developmental factor. The risk of kidney failure increases with age and is more in cases of people in the age range 40-60.
Higher association between psoriasis and Kidney disease has been established. However, the research did not support cause-effect relationship between these two factors.
