Regular exercising may boost students’ academic performance as well as self esteem-result of a new experiment. The more is the planned physical activity, greater is the impact on math, science and English test scores.

The study was called in the "Children of the 90s" study in which children born between 1991 and 1992 were evaluated. When the participants became 11 year old, their daily physical activity was measured for a period of 3 to 7 days. Participants wore a special belt for this purpose. Duration and intensity of participants’ daily physical activity were carefully evaluated.

It was found that outcomes were quire lower than average expectations. Prescribed average exercising duration was 60 minutes daily for this age group. However, boys reported 29 minutes of activity on average, which was 18 minutes for girls.

Researchers also accounted for other factors that might have bad effects on students’ performance viz. low birth weight, maternal smoking during pregnancy, social and economic status. The results were encouraging. Those participants who had higher physical activity than their counterparts, showed more success in national academic exams. The difference was evident in math, science and English scores.

The research provides a link between exercising and higher academic performance. However, researchers are unable to explain the precise cause behind this connection. They have put some suggestions like effects of exercising on improved classroom learning or improved self esteem. The cause may be biological as exercising might have caused changes in brain functions and structures as the researchers have stated. Researchers have doubt whether motivation played an important role in determining students’ performances.

Researchers think that this research is valuable for designing school policy. Schools can now acknowledge physical activity as a way to improve cognitive performance.
