In US, nearly 4.4 million women in childbearing age suffer from this disorder. A recent research has discovered a new facet of pregnancy and bipolar disorder. Researchers have discovered that a medication lamotrigine which is used to treat bipolar disorder is less effective during pregnancy.

The study sample included 8 women who were suffering from bipolar disorder. They were being treated by lamotrigine medicine. Researchers monitored these women before and after their pregnancy. They found that blood concentrations of lamotrigine got reduced as the metabolism increased with the progression of pregnancy. As a result of this reduction, some women became more prone to depression rather than mania.

Depression during pregnancy is harmful for both the mother and fetus. A depressed mother is less likely to consume nutritious food. She may not take adequate care of herself and remain isolated from friends and family. As a result, babies may be born prematurely. They are more likely to have low birth weights.

The research suggests that as the lamotrigine levels fell, pregnant women suffer from worsening symptoms of depression. Thus, they may need higher doses of this medication. Researchers expressed hope that this research will help physicians to change the dose for pregnant women as per the need and to optimize the medicine to reduce the worsening symptoms of depression.
