Certain level of pain after surgery is considered to be normal. It is just avoided or treated with general painkillers. However, postoperative pain can be serious as it can damage your thinking ability- as the new research says.

20th November 2013, USA (http://www.zeepharmacy.co): Certain level of pain after surgery is considered to be normal. It is just avoided or treated with general painkillers. However, postoperative pain can be serious as it can damage your thinking ability- as the new research says.

Experiments were conducted on mice. Small incisions were made on the paws of mice when they were administered with either local anesthetic or general anesthetic. Mice were tested on 1st, 3rd and 7th day after the surgery to see their sensation of discomfort. Increased sensitivity to pressure was shown on first and third day but not on tenth day.

These mice performed poorly in memory and learning tests on 3rd and 7th day when compared to other mice that had no incisions. However, on 30th day, cognitive performance of both the groups of mice was not much different. Researchers also found that middle aged mice were more prone to pain-triggered memory and thinking problems than younger mice.

However, the mice that were administered local anesthetic didn’t show any cognition related problems. Nor did they have any incision site discomfort.

Results suggest that pain in incisions can cause learning and memory problems. Other factors like anesthesia, the surgery procedure and sleep disturbance may also have effects on cognitive abilities.

Although post operative pain and associated thinking problems are temporary, they can interfere with patients’ quality of life in first few days after the surgery. In this period, patient’s involvement and cognizance is necessary for quicker recovery. If the patient is suffering from cognitive problems, recovery may be delayed.

Scientists note that research conducted in animals often fails to produce similar results in human beings. And this study only explains the association between post surgery pain and memory complications. It doesn’t establish any cause-effect relationship.
