A recent research suggests that older women who drink soda and other sugary beverages are at higher risk of developing endometrial cancer.

3rd December 2013, (http://www.carepharmacyrx.com/) : Soda and sugary drinks are quite palatable. It is hard to resist the tempting of drinking these beverages. In fact, many of us like to gorge on sugary foods when they are stressed. If you are a woman and have “sweet tooth”, be cautious.

Researchers analyzed data of more than 23,000 women. All of the women were in postmenopausal stage. The follow up lasted from 1986 to 2010.

Researchers found that those women who drank substantial amount of sugary drinks and sodas had 78% higher chances of developing a hormonal cancer typically known as estrogen-dependent type I endometrial cancer. The more is the consumption of sugary beverages, the higher is the risk of developing the tumors.

Endometrial cancer is the cancer of uterine lining and it usually affects women in the age group 60 to 70.

There was no any association found between consumption of low sugar drinks, baked food, starch and endometrial cancer.

There were preexisting studies linking consumption of sugary beverages with increased obesity. According to researchers, obesity necessarily means higher than normal levels of estrogen and insulin in blood. Increased levels of these hormones are established risk factors of endometrial cancer.

The critiques said that this study results contradict with several other studies which show no link between endometrial cancer and intake of sweetened beverages. They also stressed that the study didn’t prove cause effect relationship.

In response to the criticism, researchers said that the findings needed to be proved in some further studies. These are first findings of this type and need to be reproduced in other studies. They added that the correlation between obesity and intake of sugar sweetened beverages has already been established. Excessive sugar in food can increase the risk of many diseases like diabetes, cancer and heart diseases. Hence, it is always plausible to limit the sugar intake.
