This medication is an anticonvulsant and neuropathic pain agent, prescribed for partial seizures; management of postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain caused by the varicella zoster virus); management of fibromyalgia (a condition where the patient has muscle and connective tissue pain).

When it is to be taken:

 PO- Postherpetic neuralgia: Initial-150 mg/day in divided doses. Usual: 150-300 mg/day in divided doses. Max: 600 mg/day in divided doses.

 Adjunct in partial seizures: 150-600 mg/day in divided doses. Max: 600 mg/day.

 Fibromyalgia: Initial- 150 mg/day, up to 300 mg/day after 1 week if needed and then 450 mg/day if still needed.

 Anxiety: Initial-150 mg/day. Increase slowly if needed. Max: 600 mg/day.

How it should be taken: It comes as a capsule to take by mouth. It is usually taken with or without food two or three times a day.

Special Instruction:

 Discontinue treatment if patients develop severe allergic reaction.

 Withdraw treatment gradually over at least 1 week.

 May cause peripheral edema.

 Regular vision check is recommended.

 May decrease platelet count and prolong PR interval.

 Mental health may change in unexpected ways and you may become suicidal (thinking about harming or killing yourself or planning or trying to do so) while you are taking this medication for the treatment of epilepsy.

Side Effects:

 Central Nervous System- giddiness, drowsiness, tiredness, euphoric mood, confusion, irritability, shaky movements and unsteady walk (ataxia,tremor, abnormal coordination, problems with speech, memory or attention.
 Eye and ENT- Blurred vision, double vision, abnormal vision, eye disorder, inflammation of conjunctiva, involuntary eye movement, inflammation of the middle ear, tinnitus.

 Gastrointestinal- Dry mouth, constipation, increased appetite, flatulence, vomiting, abdominal distension, abdominal pain, gastroenteritis, diarrhea, nausea.

 Genitourinary- Urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, impotence, libido decreased, urinary frequency.

 Metabolic- Peripheral edema, weight gain, edema, face edema, low blood sugar.

 Musculoskeletal- Joint pain, back pain, muscle spasm, leg cramps, myasthenia.

 Respiratory-Sinusitis, inflammation of bronchus, difficulty in breathing.

 Miscellaneous- Infection, pain, chest pain, flu syndrome, allergic reaction, easy bruising, fever, itching, hypersensitivity.

Other Precautions: Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication.

Storage Conditions: Oral: Store at 25°C. Store it at room temperature and keep in an airtight container.
