It is needed for making the genetic material of cells (DNA), and thus for growth and development. Folic acid is particularly important for the maintenance of a healthy nervous system and in the formation of red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body.

A normal diet usually provides adequate folic acid. A deficiency may occur due to poor diet, or in diseases of the small intestine that impair the absorption of vitamins consumed in food. It may also occur in pregnancy, due to an increased need for folic acid, and in people having kidney dialysis, since this removes folic acid from the blood. Certain medicines used to treat epilepsy can also cause a folic acid deficiency, as they interfere with the body's normal breakdown of folic acid.

A deficiency of folic acid can cause a reduction in numbers of red blood cells in the blood, since folic acid is necessary for their production. This is one cause of anemia. Folic acid supplements are given to allow red blood cell production to increase in folate deficiency anaemia.

Action :

Folic acid, as it is biochemically inactive, is converted to tetra hydro folic acid and methyl tetra hydro folate by dihydro folate reductase. These folic acid congeners are transported across cells by receptor-mediated endocytosis where they are needed to maintain normal erythropoiesis, synthesize purine and thymidylate nucleic acids, interconvert amino acids, methylate tRNA, and generate and use formate. Using vitamin B12 as a cofactor, folic acid can normalize high homocysteine levels by remethylation of homocysteine to methionine via methionine synthetase.

What is it used for?

 Folate deficiency anaemia, for example due to poor nutrition, malabsorption syndromes such as coeliac disease, alcoholism, or antiepileptic medicines.
 Folate deficiency anaemia of pregnancy.
 Prevention of folate deficiency anaemia in conditions where the body breaks down red blood cells too quickly (haemolytic anaemias, e.g. sickle cell anaemia).
 Prevention of folate deficiency anaemia in people having kidney dialysis.
 Dietary supplement for women planning a pregnancy and during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, in women who are at high risk of having a baby with neural tube defects. This drug is used to help stop neural tube birth defects such as spina bifida and other congenital malformations such as cleft palate or cleft lip in the developing baby.

Side effects : Neuropathy, bronchospasm, itchy skin eruptions, malaise.
