Treatments: Pyridostigmine is a medication provided to myasthenia gravis affected patient to enhance communication between nerves and muscles. These medications don’t cure this health condition but may improve muscle contraction and muscle strength.
Prednisone is corticosteroid that helps to inhibit the immune system. This will further help to limit the antibody production.
Immunosuppressants consists of medications such as azathioprine, mycophenolate mofetil, cyclosporine, or tacrolimus are provided to the patient to fight against myasthenia gravis. This medication should only be taken if prescribed by doctor.
There are many other therapies undertaken to tackle myasthenia gravis such as- plasmapheresis and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg). Plasmapheresis involves a procedure that uses a filtering process like dialysis. In this blood is routed through a machine that removes the antibodies that blocks transmission of signal from nerves to muscles.
Intravenous immunoglobulin provides body with normal antibodies that alters immune system response. Surgeons may ask the patient to have following surgery, especially to remove thymus glands:
1.Video-assisted thymectomy: In this surgery, doctor take make small incision in neck and use a long thin camera and small instruments to conduct the procedures and remove the thymus gland.
2.Robot-assisted thymectomy: In this surgery, surgeons make several incisions in the side of the chest. This procedure is conducted to remove the thymus glands using robotic system that includes mechanical arm and camera arm.
