Mechanism of action:
These tablets contain the antihistamine cetirizine, which blocks the action of histamine, a chemical released from mast cells, (cells involved in allergies) during an allergic reaction. Histamine binds to H1 receptors in small blood vessels causing them to leak, allowing white blood cells and blood proteins into the tissues, causing tissue swelling and irritation. Cetirizine is an H1 receptor antagonist, and blocks this histamine-mediated early phase of the allergic reaction, as well as having additional anti-allergic properties by reducing the migration of inflammatory cells and the release of inflammatory chemicals associated with the late allergic response. These tablets reduce the symptoms of allergic rhinitis caused by the actions of histamine, like nasal congestion, itchy eyes, runny nose and sneezing, or the symptoms of urticaria (hives), like red, raised, itchy lumps on the skin. Zyrtec tablets 10mg are fast-acting (within 10-20 minutes) and have a long-lasting effect (up to 24 hours) and are non sedative, (does not cause drowsiness), because it does not enter the central nervous system.
When should it not be used?
You should not use if you:
are allergic to cetirizine or hydroxyzine (another antihistamine related to cetirizine) or any ingredients in Zyrtec tablets 10mg
are pregnant or breastfeeding, without discussion with your doctor
How should Zyrtec be taken? You should take Zyrtec tablets 10mg with a glass of water once daily with or without food, for as long as recommended by your pharmacist. The dose you take may vary depending on the severity of your condition.
Missed dose of Zyrtec If you miss a dose of Zyrtec tablets 10mg take it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to take the next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.
