It affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause obsessive-compulsive symptoms. This drug is used to treat social anxiety disorder (social phobia), or obsessive-compulsive disorders involving recurring thoughts or actions.

Contraindications :

You should not take fluvoxamine if you are allergic to it, or if you are also using alosetron, pimozide, ramelteon, thioridazine, tizanidine, or methylene blue injection.

To make sure fluvoxamine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have :

 liver or kidney disease;

 heart disease, high blood pressure, or a history of stroke;

 a bleeding or blood clotting disorder;

 seizures or epilepsy;

 bipolar disorder (manic depression); or

 low levels or sodium in your blood (an electrolyte imbalance).

Side effects: Common side effects may include :

 nausea, diarrhea, gas, loss of appetite;

 increased sweating, mild skin rash;

 dizziness, drowsiness, weakness, yawning;

 anxiety, sleep problems (insomnia);

 dry mouth, sore throat;

 heavy menstrual periods;

 muscle pain; or

 decreased sex drive, abnormal ejaculation, trouble having an orgasm.

Interactions :

An increase in previously stable plasma levels of tricyclic antidepressants when used together with Luvox, has been reported. The combination these drugs are not recommended. Lithium (and possibly tryptophan) enhances the serotonergic effects of fluvoxamine and the combination should therefore be used with caution. The serotonergic effects may also be enhanced when fluvoxamine is used in combination with other serotonergic agents (including sumatriptin and SSRIs). On occasions this may result in a serotonergic syndrome. This drug can prolong the elimination of medicines metabolised by oxidation in the liver. A clinically significant interaction is possible with medicine with a narrow therapeutic index (e.g. warfarin, phenytoin, theophylline, clozapine and carbamazepine). The plasma levels of oxidatively metabolised benzodiazepines are likely to be increased during co-administration of fluvoxamine. In interaction studies increased plasma levels of propranolol and warfarin were seen during concurrent administration of it. It may therefore be advisable to lower the dose of these medicines when prescribing Luvox. Alcohol should not be used concomitantly with Luvox, as psychomotor impairment may be increased.
