OpenSocial API - Social Networking Application Interface

Founder of this Naples site of NeighborHelp Referrals.
OpenSocial is an effort by Google to link together many of the major social networking softwares into one, easy to program interface.
A sandbox for developers to "play" with OpenSocial API is at:
http://sandbox.orkut.com
Other news online are calling it the "Facebook killer", as Facebook has its own development platform. But what is more likely is that development efforts will be side-by-side for some time to come.
It takes time for people to learn how to use a new API and those who have already invested their time and energy into using Facebook APIs may not be too quick to abandon.
At the same time, Google does have a way of making things easier.
Orkut isn't the killer social networking application as Google had hoped (although it *is* very popular among non-English speaking Americans - a market that was brilliantly captured by google via orkut) ---- but this opensocial is definitely a step in the right direction and with the blessing of Hi5 -- one of the largest social networking services outside of the US -- OpenSocial API will definitely provide more "bang for the buck".
Let's see how it plays out. It should prove interesting.
