Migraines Can Lead To Depression Aand Suicidal Thoughts

Sometimes the pain is so worse that a person has to abandon his activities and lie down for some time. The risk doesn’t end here. Researchers have found that Migraines are associated with higher risk of depression and suicidal thoughts in younger persons.

The study involved more than 6000 participants who were diagnosed with migraines. Their findings were compared with a much larger group of participants who didn’t have this disease. Of the first group participants, more than 8% of men and 12 % of women also suffered from depression. On the other hand, only 3% men and 6% women had depression but they were not suffering from migraines.

Researchers discovered that depression on account of migraines is common among younger people than in older people. Women below 30 and suffering from migraines were six times more likely to be depressed than men older than 65 years. Overall risk is twofold in people suffering from debilitating migraines. The odds of committing suicides are higher for younger people. Even more risk was seen when migraines interfered with normal daily routine.

Persons with migraine are also more likely to commit suicide than persons who don’t have headaches. In the research, nearly 16% men and 18% women with migraines said that they had regular suicidal thoughts. On the other hand, only 8% of men and 9% of women who didn’t have migraines thought about taking their own life.

Researchers are not yet clear about the age factor involved in depression and suicidal risk associated with migraines. It may be because younger people have less tolerance to pain. Lack of effective treatment and prolonged illness may be responsible for depression and suicidal thoughts.

The researchers concluded that regular screenings and intervention are necessary for younger and unmarried people suffering from migraines. It will significantly reduce risk of deadly side effects of migraines.

This research although establishes an association between migraines, depression and suicidal thoughts, it doesn’t establish any cause effect relationship.
