According to a new study, the researchers have discovered that depression affects men just as much as women.

The women are typically diagnosed with depression twice as often as men. But the new study, has considered alternative symptoms of depression typically attributed to men.
The researchers analyzed data from a national mental health survey of approximately 5500 men and women. They also noticed alternative symptoms. The researchers also wanted to observe the sex differences in depression rates which would disappear when these alternative symptoms were considered alongside more conventional ones.
Certain alternative male type symptoms included anger attacks, substance abuse, aggression and risk taking. Results declare that when both alternative and traditional symptoms are associated with men and women meet the criteria for depression in equal measures. The study explores that when men are depressed they may experience symptoms that are different than what is included in the current diagnostic criteria.
Depression affects almost 16 % population every year. It is not just costly but the illness can be debilitating for those affected by it. Though this is considered as the first study to construe male type symptoms of depression in the light of sex differences, they note that further studies should try to understand hoe masculinity and femininity influence depression rather than relying on sex alone as an indicator.
They also note that the male-type symptoms of depression are also common in women. The researchers conclude by saying that the results of this work have the potential to bring significant advances to the field in terms of perception and measurement of depression.
