A new study suggests that women who have consistent patterns or rise and wake cycles are more likely to lose excessive fat. Sleeping well is associated with less body fat in women. Not sleeping well can cause weight gain problems. Mere sleeping for 8 hours is not sufficient. The consistency and quality of sleep is also important.

Researchers analyzed data of 330 college going women. After a week, it was observed that those who had definite sleep and wake times had lower body fat. They also succeeded in maintaining healthy body weight. Sleep of 8 to 8 and ½ hours gave lowest fat saturation in the body. They also found that quality of sleep also mattered in determining the level of body fat.

Sleeping too little or too much also creates weight related problems. People who slept for less than 6 hours or more than 8 ½ hours also had higher fat levels. Those women who had more variations in sleep patterns also showed more bodily fats than those who showed less sleep patterns. Researchers said that consistent sleep patterns are associated with better health.

Possible explanation is that human body has some internal clocks. They should be running in a regular pattern to help many chemical and physical functioning in the body. When sleep patterns are changed, these activities get disrupted, causing imbalance of hormones that are responsible for metabolism. The imbalance leads to more accumulation of body fat.

Some strategies like exercising have a two way relationship with sleep. Exercising improves quality of sleep and sleep helps to get maximum possible results from the exercising.

However, researchers have pointed out that this study does not prove cause-effect relationship between sleep and weight loss. They expressed further need to carry out more investigation as this study was pertaining to women. However there is no reason that it does not apply to men.
