Researchers said that introducing solids before 17 weeks of age should be avoided as it may increase your child’s risk of increasing allergy.
14 December 2013, USA (http://www.zeepharmacy.co):New mothers are often confused about duration of breastfeeding and the right time to start solids. They want it to be just “perfect”. Neither before not after that specific point of time. A new research not only enhances the importance of breastfeeding but also guides women regarding introduction of solid foods. If breastfeeding is stopped and solid foods are started too early, infants become susceptible to develop many infections. However, if breast feeding is continued with gradual introduction to solid foods after 17 weeks, it will help to protect infants from allergies-as the researchers have said.
Researchers looked at the data of some children. Among them, 41 children had developed food allergies before they reach the age of 2 years. They studied the diet of these children and compared it with that of 82 children who didn’t develop any food allergies.
Researchers found that children who developed allergies were given solid foods at the age of 16 weeks or younger. It was earlier than those children who didn’t develop any food allergies. Breastfeeding period was also less for first group of children. They were less likely to be breast fed after introduction of cow milk and other processed foods. Several previous studies have found an association between starting solid foods and increased risk of food allergies. Researchers said that introducing solids before 17 weeks of age should be avoided as it may increase your child’s risk of increasing allergy.
The research supports the convention that solid foods should not be introduced till the child turns six months of age. Many pediatricians recommend that breastfeeding should continue for one year or more and solid foods should be introduced gradually in the diet.
According to critiques, this research doesn’t support Grimshaw’s theory. Nor does it clarify why allergies develop. However, this theory supports importance of breast feeding and establishes it is a protective strategy against allergies.
The exact way in which breast milk prevents infants from allergies is not yet clear. Researchers are further discovering for involvement of antibodies.
Researchers have advised mothers that they should continue breastfeeding their infants despite introduction of solid foods. This will help infant’s immune system to identify that the food is safe. Researchers emphasized that role of Breast milk in educating the immune system regarding food safety is extremely important.
