A CD With a Bite, handy pastry brush...
Hints From Heloise

A CD With a Bite
Dear Heloise: If you want to MAIL A CD as a gift, sandwich it between two bags of unpopped microwave popcorn. You not only protect the CD, you give a gift of popcorn! -- Corkey Addcox, Mount Shasta, Calif.
HANDY PASTRY BRUSH
Dear Heloise: On impulse, I pulled out my pastry brush and dusted off my telephone. Friends encouraged me to tell you. It's simple, but I'd never thought of it before, so ... -- Jan, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Jan, glad your friends encouraged you to send your hint. I'm sure many will use it. My special thanks to all the (Colorado Springs) Gazette readers who sent letters and e-mails about the new placement of my column in the paper. We get a lot of correspondence from your area! I visited years ago, and it's just beautiful. Hope to come back soon.
Here are two hints from Caroline Munoz of Austin, Minn.:
BOOK RETURN
To get a book returned to you, instead of putting your name on front flyleaf, write it on the very last page of the actual book (i.e., after the end). This way, the person will see it when he or she finishes the book. No one thinks to look back at the front of a book when finishing it.
BROWN SUGAR
Regarding keeping brown sugar soft: I can't believe there are still people who don't automatically put a slice of bread in the bag after opening and then close the bag with a clip or put it in a container. This will soften up even a hard lump of brown sugar.
EXTRA PLASTIC BAGS
Dear Heloise: Just read the hint about keeping a cooler in the car trunk. Keep a few of those extra plastic sacks in there also. This will double-wrap any meats and keep them, especially chicken, from possibly dripping everywhere. It helps the environment, too (recycling). Thanks for the great hints. I've been a newspaper reader all my life -- my mom was a society/lifestyle editor for more years than I can count before she retired in 1989. She insisted on your column! -- Judy, via e-mail
Judy, how nice to know that many mothers encouraged their children (boys and girls) to read and learn life skills by simply reading this column.
CRAFT HINT
Dear Heloise: Tape a piece of wax paper to a large piece of cardboard to use when gluing, painting small objects, etc. It keeps the desk neat; just pull the wax paper off and put another piece on. -- Jacquellyn Cameron, Camarillo, Calif.
EASY-SEE
Dear Heloise: I am 86 years old and have been a fan of yours forever. I need to wear a front-closing bra because of my fibromyalgia. The white ones are no problem, but the black ones are. I cannot see the hooks and eyes. I have solved this problem. I put typewriter correction fluid on both. It works, and after many washings you just reapply. -- Carolyn from Wisconsin
