The initiative’s activist knew that though the Irish laws are against pregnancy termination be it in case of sexual violence or risk to mother’s life, those who required relevant healthcare would contact them, and they were right.
24th nov 2015, United States (http://www.mtpabortionpill.com/) : An effort by ROSA (Reproductive rights, against Oppression, Sexism, and Austerity) for Irish women sent media, pregnancy termination supporters and pro lifers in frenzy. The organization drove abortion pills bus in Ireland where ending fetal life deliberately be it under any consequence, is illegal. The bus toured cities such as Dublin, Limerick, Galway, and Cork, where it was met with protests and welcomes by citizens. But what was noticeable is a large number of women who approached the bus for help, and one of them was Sarah (name changed on request) from Limerick, who wished to end her unwanted pregnancy.
The initiative’s activist knew that though the Irish laws are against pregnancy termination be it in case of sexual violence or risk to mother’s life, those who required relevant healthcare would contact them, and they were right. Sarah has a 4-year old daughter, is in new relationship with lingering burden of mortgage, and now faced with undesired pregnancy due to failed contraception. Delivering a child this time is not pleasant, was the 31-year old Sarah’s opinion. She could not get Mifeprex tablets from hospitals or pharmacy for the purpose of fetus removal, though she direly required these. She had planned to visit UK for getting the termination procedure done, when she discovered that ROSA was coming to town. The bus toured Ireland for a week with activist on board, along with a parliament member, all risking rupture of law that could risk them up to 14 years behind the bars for distributing Mifeprex abortion pill or relevant medications (WHO approved) for assisting women in terminating unwanted pregnancies. Though the activists have not been stopped by the police, the effort pulled in media attention and protests, including those who came for consultation and the tablets.
The Irish constitution gives the life of unborn child equal importance to that of the mother, meaning that terminations of fetus are criminalized even though it may be an incidence of fetal abnormality and sexual deviant activity. Because of such repressive laws, women are not able to access abortion pill online, but around 10 to 12 females go to UK every day for getting their pregnancy ended. But, this option is not available for those who cannot afford approximate $1,654 for travel or migrants with visa problems.
Sarah has considered traveling to Britain for the services, but staying in hotel alone and going through the procedure likewise, seemed unsettling. If Mifeprex pills had been available easily, she would not have to choose a discreet way out of such a scenario. She needed a doctor to observe the process, but says that once she gets the tablets, these will be taken at home, where her friends will be around for assistance, just in case there is a complication. But, Sarah does not plan revealing to doctors that she took the medicines if any issue arises during the regimen.
A lot many women like her who had instance of unwanted pregnancy approached the activist for the medicines. Some of them spoke to the doctors in the bus; others came for the medications and consultation. Those who could not select the Mifeprex buy online option found it easier to get instant help than spending extensively for travel to UK on relevant healthcare. Earlier to few years, the state recorded infamous death of Savita Halappanavar due to septicemia in one of the Galway hospital, when she was refused of pregnancy ending, even though the procedure could have saved her life.
Many Irish citizens feel that their region is still religion and Church driven that interferes in their daily life. Though the region has supportive laws recently implied for gay marriages, when it came to pregnancy ending, the laws were still restrictive, neither could women buy abortion pill online legally. Sarah said that if required laws are given for reproductive health, then women will be able to receive apt healthcare without fear, and without having to seek the same from elsewhere. She opined that people do not choose to end life of unborn child as a fun-time experience; the process includes a lot of turmoil similar to miscarriage.
