Fixed a washing machine for the first time. Getting it apart was the hardest part (there were NO SCREWS, so 98% of online instructions were useless!!). Then I saw a video from "Uncle Harry" and saw MY washing machine's console getting taken off with a PUTTY KNIFE!) Nothing worked on it - no agitate, no spin. Looked DEAD. It was a $25 lid switch. And I learned quite a bit in the process.

A lot of the videos were, "Make big money from your neighbors by learning the lucritive trade of washing machine repair." And you know what? After reading articles/pics/vids of all the OTHER washing machines and THEN mine, troubleshooting, etc, I could do it. ANYBODY can do it. One video showed two 9 years olds taking apart a washer and explaining how to do it. Not many parts at all. Lid switch=#1 fix. Motor clutch (direct drive) or belt (belt drive is #2, etc. On fridges, bad compressor relay #1 Defrost timer #2 etc. Practical stuff to know.

(and no, I'm not starting up a washing machine repair business! But it's more proof of what I knew already about air conditioning systems, dryers, dishwashers, water treatment systems, computers, TV's, radios, lawnmowers, home construction, outboard motors (last month), refrigerators (last week) - there's usually not a whole lot to it.

The secret... See More is: Access to the correct information and a willingness to "stick to it 'til you figure it out"

(and yes, sometimes the answer is: throw it out, but usually its a minor fix. KNOWING what the fix is and being able to fix it what makes the big bux, or at least gives a great sense of accomplishment)
