The researchers reckon they have expanded an effective and safe treatment for men and women that could preclude the muscle wasting linked with many chronic diseases and with ageing.
The study also showed in healthy postmenopausal women that a small dose of the male hormone testosterone precluded protein wasting. The pure crystalline testosterone, consumed orally, went directly to the liver, and the dose (40mg/day) was small enough to assure it was contained there, with no overflow to the bloodstream and other organs.
This new approach allows people to take advantage from testosterone's capacity to stimulate muscle growth and increase muscle strength. At the same time, it avoids the side effects of testosterone when given in the usual way - administered in much larger doses by gel, injection or patch through the skin.
