You can’t sleep well at night and tired all over the day. Perhaps, you are too addicted to texting.
28th October, 2013 (http://www.carepharmacyrx.com/) : Does your day start with a good morning message and ends with a ‘Sweet dreams’ message? Do you feel awful if you received no text in a day and can’t concentrate in the work? You can’t sleep well at night and tired all over the day. Perhaps, you are too addicted to texting. To get a good night’s sleep, you should keep your cell phone away from your pillow-as a new study suggests.
83 first year students were involved in the research. All were between ages 18 to 21. Approximately two thirds were females. Researchers analyzed texting habits of the participants. In addition to this, students were asked to report their daily texting routine, stress levels and their emotional well being. They were asked about how happy, sad or excited they are about life. In addition to this; they were tested for sleep quality and signs of sleep disturbances. Researchers concluded that most of the students were sleep deprived.
More findings suggested that higher daily texting is associated with sleep deprivation. Students feel compelled to respond to messages irrespective of the time. As a result, students feel unable to sleep early, feel irritability throughout the night and are lethargic throughout the day. These effects are aggravated when stress is present.
Texting is associated with negative psychological effects of stress and can hamper and individuals’ ability of coping with the same-as the researchers have pointed out. It may reduce overall sense of well-being and cause greater emotional burnout.
However, researchers made it clear that cause effect relationship between texting and worse sleep has not been established in this study. Nor does it conclude that texting raises the risk of sleep troubles. Other factors like inherited traits, environment, higher neuroticism and lower self esteem causing sleep disturbance are yet to be analyzed to determine their role. Further information can be gathered by taking into account these factors and by conducting controlled experiments.
