Hints From Heloise

By Heloise Friday, June 22, 2007; 12:00 AM

Suitcase ID

Dear Heloise: I get your column in the Farmington, N.M., newspaper (your paper has been a Hints From Heloise client since 1990! -- Heloise) and read it every day. After recently reading different articles about how to make traveling easier, I wanted to share my hint. Since most black SUITCASES look alike (and even though many people attach ribbons, etc., some of them look alike, too), I bought the large letter stencils and, with white paint, painted my name across the back of my suitcase, and my initials on the sides.

If you travel a lot, you usually have to replace your suitcase quite often, so stenciling does not matter. And if you watch them THROW your luggage on the conveyor belt, you know that even expensive luggage cannot handle the abuse.

I, too, keep a traveling bag packed at all times. I have small plastic bags with my "doctor stuff," since when I travel with my family, I am the one with the medical items someone might need on a trip. Keeping it replenished after every trip saves a lot of time (and money -- Heloise) when getting ready to travel.

I also make a copy of my travel schedule (where I am going and times, dates, airline, etc., for both ways) and put it in my bags in the event that a bag does get lost -- the airline can send it where it should be. I put it in one of the front zipper compartments. -- Patty Brooks, Aztec, N.M.

DISPOSABLE SILVERWARE

Dear Heloise: My husband and I order carryout from restaurants several nights a week. They always include prepackaged plastic flatware and a napkin in a plastic wrapper. We use our own utensils, and I always felt guilty throwing the plastic sets away, so I saved them

After saving a couple of bagfuls, we took them to the local food shelter. They were very receptive -- they would provide the plastic-wrapped utensils when they'd serve a meal. I felt better that I found a good use for them. -- Julie Mills, Worthington, Ohio

Julie, it's so nice that you are concerned about the environment and helping others. A double-duty hint is a real winner for all!

SHARING PLANTS

Dear Heloise: Sharing self-seeding, self-propagating perennial plants from my garden with two Bible study groups creates unusual interest in gardening. I include photographs of the blooming plants, the height they will reach, the space needed in the garden, known names, water requirements, small plant samples and seeds. They all love the freebies! -- C.N. Olmeda, Newnan, Ga.

SHREDDED PAPERS

Dear Heloise: This is how we keep our shredded secrets out of others' hands: We save the shreds in a large bag, and, when full, my husband puts them under and around his fruit trees. A great way to hold moisture, and it is biodegradable. -- Doris H., Anaheim, Calif.
