hReview-aggregate support on free.naplesplus.us - an experiment
Google's upcoming support for hReview-aggregate microformat got me thinking and making modifications...
It took me all morning, plus about a week's worth of research, but I think I've successfully recoded naplesplus to support hReview-aggregate - a Microformat that is in the experimental stages.

since the majority of the pages on naplesplus are related to the businesses operating in Collier County, I thought a rating / review setup would be appropriate. Business owners still can claim their pages (just shoot an email my way) and people can still rate and add comments.
But instead of them being comments, now it is "Reviews". And the five star rating system has been reintroduced.
At the bottom of each page, is a "Rate this page" or a series of stars. Click on it to rate the business there.
Then, click 'Add a review' to put your two cents in about the business.
We're not as fancy as Yelp, as rating/reviews is not our main endevour. However, compliance with upcoming standards is important to me, so I've been working hard at it.
I think these revised features will be a valuable resource for the citizens and businesses of the area and as a resource for Google to REALLY see what us locals think.
Unfortunately, I have no way of testing compliance with hReview-aggregate format, since nobody has come out with an hReview checker that's up and running.
But hopefully as time goes on, it'll get figured out and we'll be able to supply Google with some decent "Rich text snippets".

I've thrilled with the positive response to revising the nature of "comments" and revising the five-star rating system here. (it's still a work in progress). People are starting to leave reviews for our businesses here and it's fantastic! With the largest known database of Collier County, FL businesses (even some that *aren't* registered with the county or state agencies!) - we are pleased to have become such a valuable resource for so many. -Ken, webmaster. |

I think Google should use friend-connect or some similarly simple system to help webmasters incorporate reviews into their blogs and websites. A widget will go a long way to improving the system of stars and reviews. With 36,000+ Collier County, Florida companies represented on http://free.naplesplus.us/sections/view.php/2/naples-business-directory-collier-county-associations-musicians I think that the addition of a web-wide review system will improve the quality of "local search", which is still in its infancy online. I'm just glad that we can do our little part to help the effort. Ken |
