Hints for a Hurricane

Dear Heloise: In 2004, we had to deal with the aftermath of four HURRICANES that came up the southwest coast of Florida. Hurricane Charley was the worst, as it left us without electricity for 12 days, telephone for nine days, drinking water for 10 days and with unbearable heat. A few things we found to make the situation livable were:

A gas grill with burners on the side. Great for heating water for instant coffee or tea. We used inexpensive pots so we wouldn't blacken or ruin our good ones.

We filled our electric freezer with ice every day and put things that needed to be refrigerated in plastic bags inside it. The insulated chest kept the ice from melting too rapidly, and you can drain the chest from the plug at the bottom.

Large plastic containers made great catchalls and were used for everything from hauling yard debris to catching water from leaking ceilings and roof.

Clotheslines and drying racks are great if you have to wash clothes by hand.

Form a team with your neighbors so that only one person has to stand in line each day for ice, water, etc., to supply several houses.

-- Alta Eisenbaugh, Port Charlotte, Fla.

TRAVEL HINT

Dear Heloise: When traveling and staying in hotels where they now provide hair dryers (how great is that?), as soon as you check into your room, see if the dryer works. It's much easier to get maintenance late in the afternoon or early evening than at 6 a.m., when you're hurrying to get to an early-morning meeting. Twice I experienced inoperative dryers in the early a.m. Panic! -- P. Howe, Brea, Calif.

BAKING-SODA HINTS

Dear Heloise: Here's a hint for making the most of a recycling idea. Take two 1/2-pound, empty, clean, soft margarine tubs. Fill each one half-full of baking soda. Save the lids. Place one tub in the freezer and one tub in the refrigerator. Change frequently. Each time you replace the old with the new, put the lid on the old tub and keep it under your kitchen sink. When you want to scrub out your sink, use the baking soda. It is nonabrasive, and as it is washed down the drain, it will freshen the pipes and the garbage disposal. I have not had an odor problem from my garbage disposal since I started doing this. -- Norma R., Cave Creek, Ariz.

HANDY TWIST-TIES

Dear Heloise: I save the twist-ties from food packages. They are handy to use on appliance cords. This makes storage neat and tidy! -- A Reader, via fax
